Welcome to the Cheam Parish and Sutton Baptist Cricket Club
Now into our third season playing at Netherne on the hill in the rolling hills of Surrey, the Cheam Parish and Sutton Baptist Cricket Club are a sociable but competitive side looking to play to the highest standards whilst maintaining a fun atmosphere in which we all enjoy our Saturday afternoons.
Running one mens Saturday team we are now entering our third season in the Wey Valley League, which we have now finished runners up in twice. We are always keen to hear from new players of any standard so if you want to find out more either come to one of our home fixtures or send an email.
Season off to a damp start
A warm welcome to a somewhat damp looking 2004 season. Having finished second in the Wey Valley League for the second year in a row 'The Parish' had been looking forward to making a firm statement of intent in the new season. Sadly the first two league fixtures have been lost to the weather, a double disappointment as the opponents Temple Bar and Addlestone & Hamm Moor always provide thoroughly enjoyable, strong fixtures and some potentially fantastic cricket has been lost.
The third fixture, against 2002 champions Guildford City, did go ahead though in glorious conditions and CPSB carried on where they left off with a strong victory. Hopefully setting the tone for another successful season.
West Byfleet Roger'd
29/5/2004 CPSB beat West Byfleet by 189 runs
Mike Roger returned his first five wicket haul for The Parish, a just return for a fine spell of bowling that ensured that West Byfleet were never going to pose a serious threat to The Parish's strong total of 264 for 4.
Earlier skipper Jon Alexander showed his class against a weaker West Byfleet side than encountered previously with a masterful innings of 121. Supporting Alexander were two fine innings from first Billings and then Stockton, both of whom scored exactly 50 and once Roger got going Byfleet were always going to fall well short, eventually all out for 75.
Hedley too strong.
5/6/2004 Hedley beat CPSB by 4 wickets
Last season Hedley showed signs of being a very strong side with aggressive batting and fast accurate bowling but lost twice to The Parish due to a lack of strength in depth. This time though they came with eleven players capable of playing to the highest standards and CPSB were never in the game.
Asked to bat first CPSB were quickly in trouble with Stockton falling to the second ball of the day. Things quickly got worse with all of the Hedley bowlers bowling with speed and accuracy. From 22 for 5 the Parish were dead and buried before heroics from Billings and the tail managed to bring the score up to 122.
This was never going to be a challenging target for Hedley's agressive batsmen and, despite wickets falling near the end, the total was overhauled with four wickets in hand.
Woking blown away by Flanagan.
12/6/2004 CPSB beat Woking & Horsell by 7 wickets
Last season Woking & Horsell proved a stern challenge for The Parish, almost chasing 320 in a classic then thrashing them in their own back yard during the holiday season.
This time though they were simply blown away by an awe-inspiring opening spell of bowling from Mark Flanagan. His intent was made clear by the second ball of the day which pitched outside leg before ripping off the top of off stump leaving the Woking skipper bemused. None of the batsmen had any answer to his raw pace and prodigious movement as he went on to return 6 for 6 from his ten overs, ably backed up by Mike Roger with two wickets of his own.
58 was never going to be a stern test for The Parish, though Billings, Waghorn and Howe were all dismissed cheaply. At the other end Alun Stockton finally showed signs of a return to form with 44 not out, seeing the side comfortaby home.
